While many top players are in Las Vegas already for the World Series of Poker, there were still a number of good ones who took the virtual felt for this week's Super Tuesday, PokerStars's weekly $1,050 no-limit hold'em tournament. Several notables made the final table, in fact, with Team Online member Caio Pessagno among them. Alas for the Brazilian, he would come up one spot shy of the win this week, falling after a nearly hour-long heads-up battle with joeyspanne88 of Costa Rica who grabbed the victory and $89,617.30 first prize.
A total of 467 entered the Super Tuesday this week, making a $467,000 prize pool that again easily beat the $300K guarantee. After exactly four hours and 12 minutes that field had played down to 100 players. By then Mcrizel had claimed the top spot with more than 113,000 chips at a time when the nearest competitors were hovering around the 60,000-chip mark.
About an hour-and-a-half later they were down to 55 -- just one off the money -- with Mcriziel having slipped just below 100,000 and into fifth position and ravipokerg with over 165,000 and leading the group who had charged ahead.
Soon nebo_blizko was all in and at risk for about 13 big blinds with J♦J♣ versus Russell 'rdcrsn' Carson's A♥K♦, and when a king appeared among the community cards, nebo_blizko had stone bubbled as the other 54 players reached the cash.
It took a little over an hour more to play down to 18, with ravipokerg maintaining the top spot while pushing up close to 420,000 when no one else had 270,000. Meanwhile Team Online member Caio 'Pessagno' Pessagno was there as well, and after having battled with a short stack for a while sat right in the middle of the pack with an average number of chips.
Over the next 45 minutes they'd play down to nine, with ravipokerg remaining in front with more than half a million chips. During that stretch uwintakeit (18th), nathkpk (17th), and thehinch (16th) each earned $4,203; thunder32us (15th), Mcrizel (14th), and Carster (13th) made $5,137 apiece; and selinantis (12th), boca2004 (11th), and pokerteenpro (10th) each took away $6,071.
The final table was set.
Seat 1: Mathew 'Matfrankland' Frankland (United Kingdom) -- 61,911
Seat 2: joeyspanne88 (Costa Rica) -- 417,845
Seat 3: Pimmss (Netherlands) -- 124,818
Seat 4: Russell 'rdcrsn' Carson (Canada) -- 216,343
Seat 5: ravipokerg (United Kingdom) -- 559,152
Seat 6: Kilroyx (Finland) -- 133,219
Seat 7: Ringelsdorf (Austria) -- 345,955
Seat 8: Team Online member Caio 'Pessagno' Pessagno (Brazil) -- 279,751
Seat 9: Ariel 'ArielBahia' Celestino (Brazil) -- 196,006
Mathew 'MatFrankland' Frankland -- fresh off a small cash at the ISPT in Wembley where he finished 59th -- started the final table as the short stack, but over the next half-hour managed to battle back and by the time the blinds had increased to 2,800/5,600 had improved to just under 150,000.
That's when a hand arose in which Caio Pessagno opened with a cutoff raise to 11,688. Frankland then reraised to 25,380 from the small blind, and when it folded back Pessagno called.
The flop came 4♦Q♥T♥. Frankland led for 24,370 and Pessagno called. The turn then brought the 7♠ and an all-in push for 98,305 from Frankland, again called by Pessagno.
Frankland showed A♥K♥ for the nut flush draw plus a gutshot draw to Broadway, while Pessagno showed Q♦Q♣ for a set of queens. The Q♠ then landed on fifth street, improving Pessagno further to quads and ending Frankland's run in ninth.
A little while later the blinds had moved up to 3,200/6,400 when Ringelsdorf opened to 15,685 from the small blind, then Pessagno reraised to 37,250 from the next seat. Ringelsdorf responded with a shove for 149,809, and Pessagno called.
Ringelsdorf: A♣Q♠
Pessagno: A♠K♣
A tough spot for Ringelsdorf in this blind-vs.-blind battle, and after the community cards came 7♦T♣9♠, then J♥, then 3♣, and Ringelsdorf was eliminated in eighth.
About an orbit after that it was ravipokerg raising to 12,999 from early position, then Pimmss pushing for 104,609 from the big blind and ravipokerg calling. Pimmss had A♥Q♦ and needed help against ravipokerg's Q♠Q♥, but the next five cards brought none -- coming 5♠9♠K♥3♣K♠ -- and Pimmss was done in seventh.
They played about 10 minutes more, and after another increase of the blinds and antes Ariel 'ArielBahia' Celestino came in for a min-raise to 14,400 from the cutoff seat, then Russell 'rdcrsn' Carson -- he of one of the 'sickest setups' for grinding online -- reraised to 144,000 from the small blind, leaving less than 20,000 behind.
ravipokerg then four-bet shoved from the big blind for 273,600 total, and Celestino decided to step aside. Carson called with his remaining chips, showing 8♠8♣ while ravipokerg had A♦K♠. The A♣4♣A♥ flop gave ravipokerg trips, and after the 9♦ turn and 7♥ river, Carson's run had ended in sixth.
The tourney marched on, and as they were approaching the tourney's nine-and-a-half-hour mark ravipokerg was still leading when raising 2x to 18,000 from UTG, and Caio Pessagno reraised to 44,544 from the button. Ariel 'ArielBahia' Celestino then four-bet to 80,000 from the small blind, and it folded all of the way back to Pessagno who pushed all in and Celestino called with the 167,085 he had left.
Pessagno had A♣K♦ and ArielBahia Q♦Q♥. The flop came 8♥K♥T♣ to put Pessagno in the lead. The turn was the J♥, giving Celestino more saving outs with an open-ended straight draw. But the river was the 8♣, and Celestino was knocked out in fifth.

The final four pushed onward, and soon joeyspanne88 seized the lead, pushing up to around 900,000. Then they reached the 10-hour break, at which point joeyspanne88 had more than 1.25 million, with Pessagno next with just over 527,000, Kiloryx third with about 307,000, and ravipokerg fourth with just under 247,000.
A few minutes after play resumed the blinds were 7,000/14,000 when joeyspanne88 open-raised to 32,119 from the small blind, then ravipokerg reraised all in for 248,885 from the big blind and joeyspanne88 called.
It was spades all around as joeyspanne88 showed K♠Q♠ and ravipokerg J♠7♠. The flop came 3♠J♥9♠ to pair ravipokerg once, then the 7♦ fell on the turn to give ravipokerg a second pair. But the river was the 8♠ making three more spades on board, and as joeyspanne88's flush was best, raviopokerg was out in fourth.
Just a few minutes later Pessagno raised to 29,340 from the button, joeyspanne88 called from the small blind, then Kilroyx pushed for 213,001 from the big blind and only joeyspanne88 called. Both players had aces, but joeyspanne88's A♥9♥ meant Kilroyx was looking for help with A♠6♥.
The flop paired both, coming 9♣6♦4♥. The turn was the J♣ and river the K♠, and Kilroyx was done in third.
Heads-up began with joeyspanne88 enjoying a big million-plus chip lead with 1,689,450 to Caio Pessagno's 645,550.
They battled nearly half an hour, with joeyspanne88 whittling Pessagno down to 366,000 in the process. Then Pessagno earned a double up when his A♠3♠ held up versus joeyspanne88's K♣Q♣. A little later came a hand in which Pessagno turned a straight to earn a better than half-million chip pot to edge up close to 1 million. joeyspanne88 pushed back some, however, and by the 11-hour break sat with 1,500,993 to Pessagno's 834,007.
They returned from the break and after 10 more minutes their duel was approaching one hour with joeyspanne88 up to 1.65 million and Pessagno down under 685,000. Then with the blinds up to 12,500/25,000, Pessagno raised to 52,000 from the button, joeyspanne88 reraised to 123,124, Pessagno shoved all in for a total of 680,000 even, and joeyspanne88 called.
Caio Pessagno Poker Table
It was A♣9♣ for joeyspanne88 and A♦3♥ for Pessagno. The flop came Q♥K♥5♣, then the 4♥ fell on the turn to give Pessagno both a flush draw and a gutshot to a wheel. But the 8♣ fell on fifth street, and joeyspanne88 had won.

Congratulations to joeyspanne88 for topping a typically tough Super Tuesday field and especially challenging final table to grab the win and nearly $90K first prize. Kudos as well to Caio Pessagno of Team Online for making it to that epic heads-up battle and ultimately earning a nice payday for second place.
